We have an exciting program that you won’t want to miss! Our speaker, Tim Platek, impersonates Revolutionary War minister Thomas Davis. We will have awards and honored guests. Four new members will be inducted. We will be recognizing our Eagle Scout and Knight Essay winners. Also, we will have the Virginia Society C.A.R. President and Senior President to donate to their project.

December 3 - NSSAR/NSDAR Commemoration of the Battle of Great Bridge

The formal NSSAR Commemoration of the Battle of Great Bridge will start at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, December 03, 2022, at the Great Bridge Battlefield Mueseum, Chesapeake, VA.

There will be a dinner Friday evening as well (December 2nd).

November 12 - 247th Anniversary of the Skirmish at Kemp’s Landing Commemoration

Please see the attached invitation to the Skirmish at Kemp’s Landing. This will be the first commemoration of this event hosted by the Norfolk Chapter in quite a few years. Our Secretary, Dr. Pat Hannum, who has done quite a lot of research on the skirmish, will be the speaker. Although this is a Chapter event and will be small by comparison the the Commemoration of the Battle of Great Bridge, it is nonetheless significant, especially for those who are interested in Princess Anne County history. The first patriot blood shed on Virginia soil occurred here and it was a lead up to Great Bridge. Put the date on your calendar and plan to attend!

We have an exciting program that you won’t want to miss!
Our speaker, Robert Kelly, is the Gloucester County Museums Coordinator and is responsible for management of the Gloucester Museum of History. Prior to this appointment, Robert served as the Casemate Museum Historian from 2014-2019, and as Fort Monroe Authority’s Research and Preservation Assistant from 2011-2014. Robert also serves as the President of the Fort Monroe Historical Society and Vice-President of the American Friends of Lafayette. He will be speaking on Lafayette 2024 and his 1824 Visit to Fort Monroe. The bicentennial of Lafayette’s Final Return to America as “Guest of the Nation” is quickly approaching in 2024-2025. Learn about the American Friends of Lafayette and their efforts to commemorate this important bicentennial with educational programming and special events around the United States. Also learn about Lafayette’s visit to Fort Monroe and his connections to the fort’s architect, French army engineer Simon Bernard.

September 17 - Constitution Day Social

Save the date! The afternoon of Saturday, September 17, 2022 – Our Norfolk Chapter SAR is planning a joint “Constitution Day Social” with the Great Bridge Chapter DAR. We’re planning on this to be a casual “resort dress” event at The Norfolk Boat Club, 432 West Freemason St.. The Social would be for Great Bridge DAR/Norfolk SAR Members and Spouses and we’re looking to make it a pot-luck event. Activities planned for this two-hour afternoon Social include Constitution Day Trivia, a Silent Auction, a 50/50 raffle, and lots of good fellowship. More details to follow as we get closer to Constitution Day.

September 3 - Commemoration of the Battle of the Capes

We are approaching our Norfolk Chapter SAR’s next big event that we host. The Commemoration of the Battle of the Capes will be Saturday, September 3, 2022 at the Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek-Fort Story - See flyer. If you do not have a Military ID to get on the base, you will need to complete the ID form and send it to Gary Pridgen as stated on the flyer by July 15, 2022.

By completing the form you will be on a list at the security gate on the day of the commemoration. This will allow you access to the event. If you are not on the list or do not have a military ID you will not be given access.

May 14 - May Membership Meeting

The Norfolk Chapter SAR May Membership Meeting will be Saturday, May 14, 2022 at the Princess Anne Country Club, 3800 Pacific Avenue, Virginia Beach, VA. Social time begins at 10:30 am.

We have an exciting program that you won’t want to miss! Our speaker, Randy Flood, is a co-founder and Chief Executive Officer of the American Revolution Consortium for civic education; a non-profit organization established to educate citizens about the American Revolution with an emphasis on History, Civics, World Geography, Economics, and Historic Preservation.

DAR District 1 Officers and Chapter Regents or representatives are our invited guests as well as our area’s two C.A.R. Society presidents. November 13 - November Membership Meeting

The Norfolk Chapter SAR November Membership Meeting will be Saturday, November 13, 2021 at the Princess Anne Country Club.
This is an important meeting. The election of officers for the new administration will occur.
Also, it is again time for the annual membership renewals.

Our speaker will be Christopher Pieczynski. His topic will be the “Skirmish at James’s Plantation.” Learn how local militia troops again opposed Benedict Arnold’s army and proved his inability to turn the population in Norfolk and Princess Anne Counties against the Whig government and also showed the passion the Patriot militia had for their cause.

October 19 - Order of Founders and Patriots Plaque Dedication and Wreath Laying

As many of you may have already heard, the following events associated with this years Yorktown Day celebration have been cancelled or attendance has been limited:

  • Monday evening dinner at the American Revolution Museum at Yorktown has been cancelled
  • DAR morning coffee cancelled (this event was by invitation only)
  • Parade has been cancelled
  • Alliance Monument exercise attendance will be by invitation only
  • DAR Reception at the Custom House is cancelled (all checks previously mailed to the Yorktown Day Association for the 10/18 dinner and/or 10/19 DAR reception will be shredded)

The good news is, the Virginia SAR wreath laying at Gov. Thomas Nelson’s grave will be held at 9:15am on 10/19. In addition, a special Order of Founders and Patriots (OFPA) plaque dedication will be held at 2:30pm at Charles Church Cemetery in York County.

We are encouraging all compatriots who had planned to come to Yorktown Day to consider attending the wreath laying at Grace Church, then go for a leisurely lunch close by, followed by a drive to the OFPA plaque dedication.

Attached is the wreath laying form for the ceremony at Gov. Nelson’s grave. All questions/comments concerning this event are to be directed to Gary Hodges at gary.hodges1@verizon.net.

The following is directions and information for the OFPA plaque dedication: Charles Church Cemetery, 919 Yorktown Road, York County, Virginia 23693, is located about 10 miles south of the Riverwalk Restaurant on US 17 to Yorktown Road. If you plan to lay a wreath at this event or have questions/comments, contact Mike Weyler at meweyler@aol.com.

We regret these cancellations/changes have occurred but encourage participation at the two events still scheduled for October 19th.

September 5 - Battle of the Virginia Capes - Cancelled due to Govt Restrictions

This event has been cancelled

The Norfolk Chapter of SAR will be commemorating the Battle of the Virginia Capes where, off Cape Henry, the French battled the British fleet ultimately leading to the victory of the Patriots and the formation of their new country.

I would like to invite you to join us in this Commemoration on Saturday, September 5, 2020. Together we will remember our patriots and their fight for independence and those who offered support in the triumph for freedom.

December 7 - NSSAR Commemoration of the Battle of Great Bridge

The formal NSSAR Commemoration of the Battle of Great Bridge will start at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, December 07, 2019, in Great Bridge Battlefield Park, Chesapeake, VA. Christopher Pieczynski will be the guest speaker. The ceremony will include the 66th annual wreath laying led by Great Bridge Chapter N.S.D.A.R. The formal ceremonies will conclude by noon.

Norfolk Chapter SAR will host a luncheon immediately after the ceremony at Y’not Italian Restaurant (located at 1225 Cedar Rd.). Food and drink will be “Dutch treat.” We are planning on at least 50 attending. There will be no speaker but it will be a time of good fellowship.
